Prince Harry received a warm embrace from a young boy whose debilitating medical condition means he is barely able to walk.

Ollie Carroll, 5, suffers from the rare Batten disease, which affects his mobility and will soon lead to the point where his muscles stop working.

But when he saw the Prince at the WellChild awards Ollie used all of his strength to stand up and give him a hug.

Harry, who is patron of the WellChild charity, was at the event to recognise the courage of children living with serious illness and the medical professionals who care for them.

Whilst there Prince Harry saw Ollie pick up the Inspirational Child award for the four to six age category.

Ollie’s mother Lucy said she was not sure whether he knew who he was hugging, but he was instinctively drawn to Harry, leaving his arms tightly wrapped around his neck for several seconds.

She said: “He was thrilled – they both were.

“He (Harry) is very privileged because Ollie cannot stand up by himself and he used his strength to stand up and hug him”.

As well as hugs and drawings, Harry was presented with a monkey made from two socks by eight-year-old lung disease sufferer Samuel Merrick.
