William “Bill” Stevenson, the 77-old former husband of former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his current wife…
Stevenson was indicted Monday by a grand jury in New Castle County, Delaware, on a felony charge of murder in the first degree in the death of 64-year-old Linda Stevenson, according to law enforcement officials.
What Happened
Police were called to the couple’s home in the Oak Hill area of Wilmington on December 28, 2025, after reports of a domestic dispute. Officers arriving shortly after 11 p.m. found Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but she was later pronounced dead at the scene.
A cause of death has not yet been publicly released by investigators. Authorities said the case was the subject of a weeks-long investigation before the indictment was returned.
Stevenson was taken into custody at his home without incident on February 2, 2026, and arraigned in court. He remains held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington after failing to post $500,000 bail.
Victim Remembered
Linda Stevenson was described in her obituary as a mother, grandmother, and small-business owner who ran an accounting business and was devoted to her family and community. Reports noted that her obituary made no mention of her husband.
Neighbors expressed shock at the developments. One neighbor described the couple as friendly and often seen going out to dinner together before the incident.
Connection to Jill Biden
William Stevenson was married to Jill Biden from 1970 until their divorce in 1975. At the time of their marriage, Jill Biden was a student at the University of Delaware. After their divorce, she later married Joe Biden in 1977. Stevenson’s ties to the Biden family stem from this early marriage more than 50 years ago.
Officials from the former president’s and first lady’s post-White House office declined to comment on the case. Jill Biden has not released a personal statement.
This remains a developing story, and further updates may clarify how the investigation unfolded and what evidence the prosecution intends to present.
